What the light remembers

The sanctuary folds enormous distances and ages into a few moments. Its lights stand for clouds of matter. The instruments are imagined; the distinction between making an element and making a molecule is real.

ONE SMALL WORLD, BEGUN AGAIN

Nothing here
was made from nothing.

The oxygen was a star’s work.
The hydrogen was older than any star.
The rain was yours.

WHAT YOU MADE

A star’s work.
A molecule’s work.

In the star, three helium nuclei became carbon. Carbon captured another helium nucleus, making oxygen. These nuclear reactions changed the element and released energy.

In the cool, two hydrogen atoms joined each oxygen atom to make water. Their nuclei stayed separate. This was chemical bonding.

Each light represents a cloud of matter. The sanctuary compresses enormous scales and ages into a few moments.
